Questions about gyms and InterFit

Straight answers on the service, joining a gym and getting out of a membership. State rules are linked to their source.

Using InterFit

What is InterFit?

An independent referral service. You send one enquiry and we pass it to one local gym or strength and conditioning studio.

Is InterFit a gym or part of a chain?

Neither. InterFit does not run any gym and is not part of any gym business, council or government agency.

Why might a gym pay you?

The business that receives an enquiry may pay for the referral. That keeps the site free to use. It does not change anything you pay the gym.

Do you publish prices or rankings?

No. Prices change and depend on the agreement, so ask the gym directly and get the answer in writing.

Joining a gym

What should I look at on a first visit?

The floor at the hour you would train, the changing rooms, how busy the racks are and how staff answer questions about the contract.

Should I take the agreement home before signing?

If you can, yes. In Queensland you must be given a chance to read the agreement and the fitness centre's rules before you sign (Queensland Government). Anywhere, ask for a copy.

What should I keep after joining?

Your copy of the signed contract. Consumer Affairs Victoria's guide (2011 edition) says members should always be given a copy of the completed contract bearing their signature (Consumer Affairs Victoria).

Can a gym limit its liability if I get hurt?

Consumer Affairs Victoria says recreational businesses, gyms included, can limit their liability for death or personal injury only if they tell you before you agree to buy (Consumer Affairs Victoria). Look for that clause.

Cooling-off and cancelling

I joined in Queensland and changed my mind. What now?

New agreements carry a 48-hour cooling-off period. Tell the gym in writing before the 48 hours are over. Any money paid in advance must be refunded, and you must receive it within 14 days (Queensland Government).

Can a gym make me use its own cancellation form?

Consumer Affairs Victoria's 2011 guide says requiring a specific form or procedure to cancel is an unnecessary formality and unfair, and that any form should be optional (Consumer Affairs Victoria).

Does stopping my direct debit cancel the membership?

Not necessarily, according to the same guide. Cancel the membership in writing as well, and keep proof of the date.

Who stops the direct debit in Western Australia?

The gym. WA Consumer Protection says the fitness supplier is responsible for cancelling third-party direct debit payments (WA Consumer Protection).

In the ACT, how do I use the cooling-off period?

Give the gym written notice with evidence of your membership, delivered to its registered or business address or posted there by certified mail (ACT Fitness Industry Code of Practice 2026).

Your details

Do you ask about health conditions?

No, and please leave them out of the form. If you have one, talk to your doctor before starting at a gym.

Who sees what I send?

One local gym or studio, plus the services that host the site and send its email. The enquiry page has the full notice.
