Council pools with gyms
Brisbane City Council has 21 swimming pools across the city, and they offer group fitness classes as well as laps. Some go further. Mount Gravatt East Aquatic Centre has a 24-hour gym. Sandgate Aquatic Centre on the northside has a gym next to its 50-metre outdoor pool and 25-metre heated indoor pool. Colmslie Aquatic Centre in Morningside has a health club and runs group fitness.
A pool with a gym suits people who mix swimming and weights. If you want a full strength floor or coaching, compare it with a private gym or a strength and conditioning studio.
Queensland's 48-hour cooling-off
Queensland writes its gym rules down. New gym agreements must include a 48-hour cooling-off period. In that window you can change your mind and cancel without giving a reason, and the gym must refund you within 14 days.
- Write down the date and time you signed.
- Cancel in writing and keep the record.
- Chase the refund if it has not arrived within 14 days.
Limits on membership length
The Queensland Government says it is illegal for a gym to offer a prepaid agreement that expires more than 12 months after purchase. An ongoing agreement cannot carry a minimum term longer than 18 months. If a Brisbane gym offers something longer, ask why and do not sign until you have an answer.
Close to home or on the commute
Brisbane's urban area had 2,447,280 residents at the 2021 Census, and by our count about 29.6% were aged 20 to 39. Just over half of employed people (55.0%) drove themselves to work. If you drive, check parking and peak-hour traffic before you join a gym across town. Send your suburb and the times you train and we pass your enquiry to one local gym.
