A council resolution to buy a gym

On 28 October 2024 Wagga Wagga City Council resolved to authorise a contract to buy an existing local gym business. The council's December 2024 agenda records it (council agenda). A report to the March 2025 meeting then proposed one brand covering the Oasis Aquatic Centre, that gym and the Jim Elphick Tennis Centre. Each venue would keep its own identity. Options in the report included adult gym and swim packages with aqua and gym classes (March 2025 agenda). The report was a proposal. Check with the council what is on sale today.

Lock-in or month to month

One package in that March 2025 report was labelled a lock-in contract. Whoever offers you a fixed term, check it before you choose:

  • Ask for the minimum term in months.
  • Ask what it costs to leave early. Get it in writing.
  • Compare it with the no-contract option, if there is one.
  • Plan the exit. NSW Fair Trading points out that direct debits can keep coming after a membership expires, and gyms often want 30 days written notice (NSW Fair Trading).

Pools and workout spaces at Bolton Park

The council describes the Oasis Aquatic Centre at Bolton Park, Morgan Street, as having multiple indoor and outdoor heated pools and a range of workout spaces. It is upgrading the centre's heating and plant to cut energy use and emissions (Have Your Say Wagga Wagga). Ask whether works affect opening hours before you sign up for a swim and gym package.
