Gyms in Newcastle

Newcastle - Maitland is one urban area run by three councils. Tell us your suburb and the kind of gym you want, and we pass the enquiry to one local gym or studio.

Three councils, one urban area

The ABS counted 508,437 people in Newcastle - Maitland at the 2021 Census. The median age was 39. By our count, about 27.0% were aged 20 to 39 (ABS QuickStats). The area spans the City of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland. So give us your suburb, not just the city. A studio in Merewether is little help if you live in East Maitland.

Council pool plans with gym space

Two council projects could add gym space. Both are proposals. Neither is open.

  • Lambton. On 8 July 2024 City of Newcastle reported that plans for a year-round aquatic facility at Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre were moving forward. The proposed upgrades could include an indoor 25m pool and a new gym (City of Newcastle). The council's Inland Pool Strategy rates Lambton as a 'Greater Newcastle' centre that serves the whole council area, with fitness and training among its roles (Lambton Pool project page).
  • Maitland. The Partnership and Advocacy Strategy 2026-27 lists a Maitland Aquatic Centre expansion that could include a health and fitness centre. The next phase it names is a master plan and business case (Maitland City Council).

Want to start this month? Do not wait on a plan. Ask the council for a timeline and train somewhere else in the meantime.

Training in the water

Maitland City Council holds aqua fitness classes through the week at Maitland Indoor Pool. It describes them as focused on cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance (Maitland City Council). That suits people who want a class without a gym floor. If you want barbells and a coach, look at strength and conditioning or an open gym membership instead.

Checks before you sign in NSW

  • Read the full agreement, not the sign-up screen.
  • Find the minimum term and write the end date down.
  • Expect the debits to keep running after the term ends. NSW Fair Trading says you often need to give the gym 30 days written notice to stop them (NSW Fair Trading).
  • Ask how a pause or a move to another town is handled.

A note on who we are: InterFit runs no gym floor of its own. It is an independent referral service, and each Newcastle enquiry goes to one local business, which may pay for the referral. Send yours here, or browse other areas.

Newcastle questions

Is there a council gym at Lambton pool?

A new gym was among the proposed upgrades City of Newcastle reported in July 2024. Count it as a plan until the council announces it is open.

Do you cover Lake Macquarie and Maitland too?

Yes. Put your suburb in the form, for example Warners Bay or East Maitland, and we pass the enquiry to one gym or studio near it.
