A council gym at Hay Park

The City of Bunbury runs South West Sports Centre at 1 Rotary Avenue, Hay Park. Its gym has dumbbells, barbells and weight plates. Resistance machines include chest press, leg press, lat pulldown and cable machines. A functional area holds battle ropes, medicine balls, plyometric boxes, suspension trainers and kettlebells (City of Bunbury). The centre also runs group fitness classes (class information).

The City says its memberships come without lock-in contracts or cancellation fees (South West Sports Centre). Use that as a yardstick. If a private gym asks for a fixed term, ask what you get for it.

The WA rules on cooling-off

WA fitness businesses must follow the Fitness Industry Code of Practice. Consumer Protection WA says every new membership has a seven-day cooling-off period, and you need not give a reason to cancel within it. The notice to cancel cannot be more than 30 days (Consumer Protection WA). Check your agreement for the exact notice it asks for. Keep a copy of your cancellation request and the date you sent it.

Driving to train

At the 2021 Census, 68.7% of employed people in Bunbury drove to work. Separate houses made up 85.5% of occupied homes. The urban area had 76,452 people, median age 39 (ABS QuickStats). If you will drive to train, check:

  • Parking at your usual training time.
  • Whether the gym sits on your way to or from work.
  • Opening hours on the days you finish late.
  • Whether the car park is lit if you train after dark.

Which kind of gym

A big backyard fits a few weights. It does not come with a coach. Strength and conditioning adds programming. Group fitness classes add a set time. An open gym membership gives you the floor and leaves the plan to you. Not sure which? Say so in the form and describe a normal training week. That is enough for a gym to work with.

Bunbury enquiries reach one local business only. InterFit is an independent referral service, and the gym or studio that receives yours may pay for the referral. Get started.
