Capital cities

Each capital has a page with the council and state facts that matter when you join a gym there: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and Darwin. Hobart has no page yet, but an enquiry from Hobart is passed on all the same.

Regional centres

The regional list follows the ABS urban areas of about 40,000 people or more, from the Gold Coast and Newcastle to centres such as Shepparton, Mildura and Port Macquarie. Council gyms turn up here too. The City of Gold Coast's fitness centre at Pimpama Sports Hub has a fully equipped gym, and its classes include strength sessions (City of Gold Coast). In July 2024 the City of Newcastle said plans for a year-round facility at Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre could include a new gym (City of Newcastle).

Melbourne's north, suburb by suburb

The first area we researched in depth spans three councils: Merri-bek (Coburg, Pascoe Vale and Brunswick West), Darebin (Preston, Thornbury and Reservoir) and Moonee Valley (Moonee Ponds and Essendon). Merri-bek says its four year-round centres offer swimming, gym and group fitness: Brunswick Baths, Coburg Leisure Centre, Fawkner Leisure Centre and Oak Park Sports and Aquatic Centre (Merri-bek City Council). Darebin's redeveloped Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre opened in November 2023 (City of Darebin) with an 800 square metre gym and group fitness rooms (City of Darebin).

The suburb pages are listed on the Melbourne page.

Not on the list?

Send the enquiry anyway with your suburb or town and state. We look for a gym that serves your area. If no suitable gym does, your enquiry may not be passed on, and we would rather tell you that than send it somewhere that does not fit.

Area questions

Do you cover small towns?

We take enquiries from anywhere. Towns near a capital or regional centre are the most likely to have a gym we can pass your enquiry to.

Why does my city have a page but my suburb does not?

Suburb pages take time to research properly from council sources. Melbourne's north came first. The city page still covers your suburb.
