No council gym in the shire
We looked for a council gym and did not find one. Ballina Shire Council runs pools, courts and park equipment instead. So the choice is between private gyms and studios. Before you sign with one, ask:
- What is the minimum term?
- How much notice does cancelling take?
- Can you try it at your usual hour?
- Who shows you the equipment?
Two 50-metre pools
The council operates pools in Ballina and Alstonville. Each has a heated 50-metre pool with eight lanes (Ballina Shire Council). Alstonville Aquatic Centre on Alston Avenue adds a 25-metre learn-to-swim pool. It closes every July for maintenance (Alstonville Aquatic Centre). Swim as well as lift? Ask a gym how far it is from the pool you use.
Courts on Cherry Street
The Ballina Indoor Sports Centre at 63 Cherry Street is a council venue with two full-sized courts, marked for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball and pickleball. You can pay per casual visit or buy a three-month membership. The council also lists the centre as suitable for group fitness and dance, so classes may be held there. It is a court venue, not a weights gym. Court bookings need seven days' notice.
Park equipment in Wollongbar
Wollongbar District Park in Rifle Range Road lists outdoor gym equipment among its features (Ballina Shire Council). Good for a session between gym days. Not a replacement for a rack and plates. For lifting with a coach, read about strength and conditioning.
InterFit is a referral service, independent of every gym. One gym or studio near you receives your enquiry, and it may pay us for it. Send yours.
